As a student of sociology, I delved into understanding human behavior through a research paper inspired by street artists outside Mumbai's Jehangir Art Gallery. Intrigued by their choice to sit outside a prominent gallery, I explored their backgrounds and perspectives in my study.

OBJECTIVE

The study aims to understand the struggles of young, less privileged artists in India's non-digital industry. It focuses on artists selling art outside Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, exploring their motivations, challenges, and expectations for the future.

METHODOLOGY

The research is qualitative, using a case study method with in-depth interviews. Three artists were interviewed to gather insights into their journeys, perspectives, and experiences in the art world.

Socio-Economic Influence on Art:

It underscores the significant impact of socio-economic factors on artists' opportunities and recognition, challenging the idea that art success is solely talent-based.

Shifting Gender Dynamics:

The study sheds light on evolving gender dynamics in street art, a traditionally male-dominated field, hinting at broader societal changes.

Institutional vs. Street Art Dichotomy:

The contrast between institutionalized art and the struggles of street artists highlights the elitism in the art market and the barriers to recognition and financial stability for non-mainstream artists.

Key Findings

Conclusion

The study concludes that despite financial and social challenges, these artists are driven by a strong passion for their work. They represent a crucial, though often invisible, part of the art world that challenges mainstream expectations and artistic norms.
